It's Christmas Time....

Santa is coming to town.

I'm so excited (I'm laughing at the end of the video).
Mommy apologizes that I'm sideways in the film.

Santa Claus is coming to town.....

I saw Santa Claus last night and he brought me a gift...a book - "Why Giraffes Can't Dance". I can't wait for mommy and daddy to read it to me. That Santa guy was pretty cool. He had a really neat white beard. I wonder if I'll have hair like that when I get older. Daddy took a video of me sitting on Santa's lap.

My 2nd Bath

Mommy and Daddy have decided that I smell sometimes and that it would be best if I got into the water. So, we've started bath time at the Douglass household. My first bath - I didn't like it. But, last night, I didn't mind the water. I'm actually looking forward to the next one. After my bath, though, I'm usually a little cold and I start to cry, but once I'm wrapped in my cozy towel, I feel much better. Mommy also rubs lotion on me and then daddy reads me a book. After my bath, I feel asleep during my bottle. Ooops....but, I could have slept all night if mommy and daddy didn't have to wake me every 3 hours to feed me. Hopefully, they can stop doing that once I gain a little more weight.

Check out my bath video.

My first Babysitter

Next Saturday is my baptism at mommy and daddy's church. When we were at the hospital last week, momy and daddy went to a baptism class with Aunt Cindy and mommy's good friend Katie Katz came to the hospital to play with me. Well....there wasn't a lot of playing, but I sure did sleep good in her arms.

The Douglass' "Staycation" in Denver

This is Liam writing this posting. I can't believe I'll be a month old tomorrow. Life has been weird outside of mommy, but I'm slowly getting the hang of this "real world" stuff.

Isn't this blog coo. Mommy said I could write in it whenever I want. This is my first postin....but be on the lookout for more. And there are lots more pictures of me at http://monkeytails.shutterfly.com/. Mommy is doing her best to keep pictures posted and up-to-date, but I take up a lot of her time (and hands).

I know most of you reading this know that I had to go up to The Children's Hospital in Denver a couple of weeks ago. It was my first road trip and I have to say, I prefer to ride in the car seat in mom or dad's car versus the incubator transport system the hospital drove me in up to Denver. Not cool...and they had to stick this tube down my throat to make sure that I kept breathing. That tube made my throat a little sore, but it wasn't too bad. I know mommy and daddy were scared at that point.

I know many of you are wondering what actually caused me to end up in The Children’s Hospital in Denver a few weeks ago and where we are today. As you probably know, I came home from the hospital with mommy and daddy a few days after delivery. (Did you see my cute hospital pictures??). Everything was going well...and I was feeling good. I was eating and sleeping and pooping - I loved my new life outside of mommy. And, my room was awesome - jungle animals - my favorite. On that Tuesday (October 26) after I came home, Grandma Douglass was holding me and all of the sudden something inside of me started to hurt and I started to cry. And, I was having a hard time getitng comfortable. This is Liam writing this posting. I can't believe I’m a month old. Life has been weird outside of mommy, but I'm slowly getting the hang of this "real world" stuff.

I know mommy and daddy were scared for me (they worry too much!).

On that Tuesday (October 26) after I came home, Grandma Douglass was holding me and all of the sudden something inside of me started to hurt and I started to cry. And, I was having a hard time getting comfortable. I was still kind of hungry, but I had started to have trouble breathing as well. Daddy held me for part of the night and then mommy took her turn. I still wanted to eat from mommy, but I was struggling and mommy and Grandma Liebsch could sense that something was wrong. I finally fell asleep but mommy called the 24-hour number for my doctor, and they said that we should go see my doctor the next morning.

Wednesday morning (October 27) was about the same as the night before - I was still uncomfortable. We went to my doctor's office and from there we were asked to go to the ER. I started to notice my skin color changing - I wasn't pink anymore...but was really white. And my darn breathing - I still grunted when I breathed. I could tell the doctor was concerned.

The ER at the hospital looked a lot different than where I was when I was born. At the ER, they admitted us to the pediatric care unit where they started to run more tests and monitor my breathing and then from there moved us to the Intensive Care Unit. I did not like all of the poking they were doing on me. And, there were a lot of nurses and doctors touching and staring at me. I could tell they were worried, but I did not have the energy to stay awake so I decided to go to sleep. In the ICU, the doctors decided to do a spinal tap and an ECHO on my heart and a “million” other tests. After they did all of these tests, the original theory was that I may have critical aorta stenosis. Aorta Stenosis is caused when the valve between one of the heart chambers and the aorta (the artery that pumps blood from your heart to your body) is too narrow and doesn't function properly. This thought process led the Colorado Springs doctors to transport me to Denver's Children's Hospital where there were more cardiac specialists available to assist small people.

Because of some of the drugs that they had started me on in Colorado Springs, the transport team had to put the tube down my throat. When we arrived in Denver, they informed mommy and daddy that I had depressed heart function and a weak left ventricle as well as very high blood pressure. Throughout the night in Denver, the team of doctors were doing everything they could to try and stabilize my heart and blood pressure. They started me on medicine for my blood pressure as well as some medicine that would help my heart beat stronger. And – it worked!

The true issue – the high blood pressure. In adults, high blood pressure happens, but in young children (especially infants like me), high blood pressure is usually secondary to another problem. What was causing this? I had no idea – I didn’t think I did anything wrong.

Throughout the 4 days and nights that we were in the Cardiac ICU in Denver, the doctors ran numerous labs and tests and scans and MRIs and Ultrasounds and ECHOs – but are still looking for answers to the high blood pressure question. They were able to rule out (for the time being) the theory of critical aorta stenosis. The doctors did notice a small narrowing of my aorta but they do not believe that is causing a lack of blood flow that would cause the high BP. They also noticed that my aortic valve is a bi-cuspid versus a tri-cuspid - which is what most of us have. They don’t think this is a problem for me right now, though – but could be in the future. And about 1% of the population has a bi-cuspid valve – do you? My cousin Jonah in Texas has a bi-cuspid valve. They’ve also asked to have mommy and daddy checked because this can be hereditary.

The doctors are still stumped as to what caused the depressed heart function and weak left ventricle and high blood pressure. Although they were able to stabilize those areas with medication, they need to know what caused those problems so that we can fix it. Is it an endocrine problem? A metabolic problem? A genetic problem? A problem that sometimes just happens and will go away in 6-9 months? All answers they’re searching for. My vote – I hope it just goes away and there is nothing wrong with me. I’m not a big fan of the doctor’s offices.

By the time we left Denver 2 weeks ago, I was doing well without much medication. We left on blood pressure medication and my BP is steady, and my heart function had improved and we were looking good.

In Denver, I was slowly gaining back my weight that I had lost since birth. However, over the last couple of weeks, I started to lose weight again. I was pretty tired and a little fussy for mom and dad. After two visits to our doctor’s office over the last 2 weeks, I was still not gaining weight. With everything that is had been going on with me and with some unanswered questions still out there, our doctor sent us back up to Denver on Tuesday. I was about a pound less than what I was at birth – I weighed 7lbs 10 oz at birth. It is normal that a baby loses some weight after birth, but by about 2 weeks, they should be back up to their birth weight.

After some deduction and some truly scientific experiments at home, though, mommy began to think that part of the weight loss was caused from breastfeeding. Since we came home from the first visit to the hospital, I had been feeding “weird” from mommy, but I didn't think too much of it (it’s really hard for me to communicate with mommy and daddy right now). However, the other day, mommy did a round of pumping to see how much breastmilk she was actually producing, and it turned out it was not much – this is why I was so hungry and irritable. So, mommy immediately started me on some stored pumped breast milk that she had from the first hospital stay. Immediately, I felt better and mommy and daddy noticed a change in my behavior. Much less fussy after feedings and much more alert.

We are now home, but I really liked my all of my nurses and doctors up in Denver. We were mostly there for observation and calorie counting, but I think the fact that we had to come up here qualifies me for the "failure to thrive" title which means the doctors also looked at other factors as to why I was not gaining weight. (They should really come up with a better term for “failure to thrive” – it’s so negative). I’m doing pretty well though..eating and pooping – but I’m still spitting up some of my food. My stomach gets upset sometimes after eating and it causes me to cry and throw up some of my food. But, I think we’ve figured that out. I’m trying not to eat as fast and mommy and daddy are monitoring how much milk I’m drinking at one time. Feeding times takes awhile, but my food is staying down and my stomach is not upset either.

Since we were up in Denver again, the doctors took the opportunity to re-run some tests and labs that came back abnormal from my first stay here. From what we have been told, the abnormal tests results from before have apparently worked themselves out as they came back normal this go around. They did take me off my blood pressure medicine, but after another ECHO on my heart, the cardiologists decided to put me back on the medicine until I see my new cardiologists, Dr. Duster, in Colorado Springs. But, My BP is staying steady –when I don’t cry too hard. And, I have started to gain weight. I gained 5 oz the first two days in the hospital and then another 4 before we were discharged. Yay…..I’m on the right track.

The Children’s Hospital is AMAZING!!! The teams of doctors and nurses are so caring and have kept mommy and daddy in the loop every step of the way during both of our visits. I really got used to sleeping in my own crib at home - hospitals do nothing for getting a good night’s rest with folks coming in to do vitals and checks every couple of hours – so I’m so excited to be back at home.

Later this week, I get to meet my cousins, Tyler and Madelyn, for the first time..and my Aunt Kellen and Uncle Andy. I’m so excited. And, Grandma and Grandpa Liebsch and Douglass are coming to celebrate this holiday called Thanksgiving. Apparently, you get to eat a lot of food and then undo your belt after you eat and watch football all day. Sounds like a weird experience…but I do like to eat and sleep….and I’m going to do my best to get along with Tyler and Madelyn.

Gobble Gobble…..Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
Love, Liam

PS - Thanks for the bib Aunt Debbie!

Lock up your daughters. Baby Liam has arrived.

A little after midnight on Thursday morning, Betsy began having contractions. Bill stayed home from work to keep an eye on her, and Betsy's sister Cindy drove down from Denver early Thursday afternoon to help out. At about 3 that afternoon we decided we should probably head to the hospital, as Betsy's contractions were about 5 minutes apart (though they weren't that strong, yet). When we got to the hospital we found out that Betsy was only 4 cm dilated, however she also had a slight fever and raised blood pressure. Additionally, the baby's heartbeat was somewhat erratic, so Betsy was admitted. When we got to the room, the contractions continued, but Betsy wasn't dilating any more, so the doctors were concerned. The doctor thought the fever and high blood pressure were caused by some sort of infection. Additionally, it appeared that her water had broken sometime before, but because the baby was sitting so low, it's head was acting as a cork. At midnight, the contractions were very strong, but Betsy was still only 4 cm dilated. Given the slow progression, and all of the other issues, the decision was made to do a C-Section.

The C-Section went off without a hitch, and Bill got to hold Betsy's hand through the procedure. At 1:17 am on Friday, October 22nd, our baby was pulled from the womb, and Bill got to announce to the world, "It's a boy!!!" He weighed 7 lbs 10 oz, and measured 21 inches. The poor little guy's head was fairly oblong from several hours of trying to ram his 10 cm head into a 4 cm hole, but other than that, he was perfect. Bill and Betsy decided to name him William Michael Douglass, Jr, and call him Liam, since it's the last 4 letters in William. Liam also means "handsome" in Irish, which definitely applies to the little guy. He's a looker, especially now that his head is back to normal.

On Saturday morning Liam was circumcised. It was a fairly traumatic experience for the little guy, but he handled it like a champ. Bill got to "assist" on the procedure by letting Liam suck sugar water off his pinky finger to help soothe him. Part of the procedure involves putting a metal "bell" under the foreskin, over the head of the penis, to protect the penis from the scalpel. The doctor had to use a larger bell than usual, as Liam is definitely his father's son.

Betsy is recovering nicely from her procedure, Liam is eating regularly and passing all of his tests with flying colors. Betsy's parents are here helping out, and Bill's will arrive tomorrow to meet their new grandson. If all continues to go well, Betsy and Liam will be discharged tomorrow, and we will go home and start this next exciting chapter in our life. The adventure continues...

The Countdown has arrived......

We're at week 37 - full term. We made it...Yay!!! It's been a long ride, and luckily a healthy ride. We can't believe that the time has come to welcome Baby Douglass into the world.

Below is Betsy at week 37 (ignore the white sports bra - but you can see Betsy's turkey thermometer stickin out)......Betsy is still feeling pretty well. We had a doctor's visit this afternoon and all is going well. Betsy is 2 centimeters dilated and 50% effaced...and baby's head is down.

Is Baby Douglass' arrival just around the corner????

We can't wait to welcome him/her into the world. We are so excited for the next part of this adventure.

The last month...the home stretch

So after Betsy's last baby shower, we decided to go to Babies R Us to get the remainder of things from our registry. We got a coupon in the mail that would give us 10% off of the remaining stuff. While we were there, we also decided to buy a glider/recliner for the nursery. If we bought it that day, the matching ottoman/nursing stool would be free. To get an additional 10% off of it, we decided to add it to the registry before we checked out. They didn't have the chair and ottoman in stock so we had to order it. When we were checking out, the girl working the register was having some issues applying our discounts. First she couldn't get the ottoman to register as free. Once she fixed that, she couldn't get the 10% discount applied to the chair. A manager came over and told us to go to her register to fix the problem. It was at that point that Betsy realized that she had failed to use any of our gift cards when she paid. So she played her "pregnancy brain" card and asked the manager to void the whole transaction so we could pay for a good chunk of the stuff with the gift cards we had received. Right about then, Bill noticed a 20% off coupon on the bottom of the shopping cart under all of our stuff. So, we then had to ask the manager not to apply the original coupon to the furniture, but instead apply the new coupon. The ladies were so nice, and we felt so bad for the hassle we caused that Betsy offered to make the ladies cookies. Bill will drop them off tomorrow. Long story short though, we got a lot of stuff and saved a bundle on it.

Baby Photos

A couple of weeks ago, Betsy was at her MOMs swimming class and one of the other moms had brought photos from her 3D Sonogram. For whatever reason, Betsy started to feel the need to also get one done. So, last weekend, we went and had our own 3D session. It was so amazing to see the face of Baby Douglass - knowing that in another 7 weeks, he/she will look completely different. Here are some photos from the session - we were probalbly about a week or two too late in getting these pictures taken as we have a feeling that Baby Douglass is pretty squished inside of there.

Baby Douglass had his/her feet and hands in front of it's face for quite a few of the photos....hence the reason som]e of them look like alien limbs. But we did get to see the baby yawn and open his/her eyes....very exciting. Also, you can see the umbilical cord in some of the photos. You can go to our photo share site to see all of the 3d images. We'll share video from the sonogram session as soon as we can get it edited.

Daddy's Doodie Apron

A couple of weeks ago, Betsy flew to St. Louis for a baby shower with her mom's side of the family. Always a good time, all the girls were WAY too good to us.

Not only were there lots of gifts for Baby Douglass, but Bill Douglass also got a gift...his very own Doodie Apron. As the saying goes.....

"This Apron is especially made for the daddy-to-be. To be slipped on when "doodie" calls, you see.

The goggles adn mask will protect you from untimely squirts. The corks can fill your ears if the noise starts to hurt.

Rubber gloves and tongs will assist you of disposing of junior's gift. Wipes and powder will help, if you still get a wiff.

Practice makes perfect, so keep trying eacch day. To do Daddy's duty in your own special way."

Here are some other photos from the shower.

"4" Generations(Betsy's Mom, Betsy, Betsy's Grandma, and of course - Baby Douglass)

Cousin Ann and her baby Bump - she's due about a month after Betsy

10 Weeks and Counting.....

We can't believe it. Where have the have the last 30 weeks gone? It seems like just yesterday we were headed to the doctor's office to confirm we were "with child."

2 weeks ago we had our 28-week appointment and all is going well. Betsy's baby bump is definitely growing and she's starting to get a bit uncomfortable doing certain activities. But, luckily, once she gets comfortable in bed, she sleeps most of the night!

Here are a couple of pictures of the growing baby.

Our Doctor

In case you'd like to see what our doctor looks like - here you go. Her name is Dr. Ridnour. Betsy's been seeing Dr. Ridnour since she moved to Colorado Springs in 2001. So far we've been very happy with her. We think she was a little weirded out when we asked to take a picture with her at our last visit.

We're now on week 27 and can't believe we're almost in the final leg of this adventure. Our next doctor's appointment in the first week of August. At the next few appointments, we're meeting some of the other doctor's who work with Dr. Ridnour, in case we happen to go into labor and she's not available, we will have at least met the doctor who may be on call.

The Magic 8 Ball

We've started to notice that Baby Douglass moves around a lot during certain activities. Does that mean that Baby Douglass likes to listen to Jeopardy or Taylor Swift...or does that mean that Baby Douglass is asking us to stop those activities...who knows. So, this morning, we decided to turn the "Baby Bump" into a Magic 8 Ball.

As the sonogram technician was not able to see the gender of the baby, we asked Baby Douglass to kick to let us know if he/she liked the names we picked out for a boy and a girl.

***Now don't get too excited. We're not sharing names until Baby Douglass is born***

But, we did ask both names and Baby Douglass kicked at the girls name. To us, this means one of several things:
1. Baby Douglass is a girl.
2. Baby Douglass is a feminine boy.
3. Baby Douglass is a boy and is super interested in girls (just like his daddy).

Below are a series of photos that we've taken over the past couple of months since Betsy's baby bump has started to show. We never remember to take pictures when Betsy is dressed and ready to go - it always seems to be when she's just gotten done working out or out of the shower. Anywho.....enjoy.

Week 23 - Sonogram Time

Check out our perfect little baby. Baby Douglass weighs about 1 lb. 4 oz (we think that is what the technician said!). As far as we know, there are five fingers on each hand and five toes on each foot. Baby Douglass looks healthy with a beating heart of around 142 bpm. Seeing the baby move its arms and legs and open its mouth reminded both of us how special this time is in our life.

Baby Update - Week 21

We can't believe week 20 has come and gone. We're half way there!!! Yay.

We went to the doctor today and nothing but good news. Betsy has gained a comfortable 13 pounds since her first visit. Baby Douglass' heartbeat is nice and strong in the 150s. And, the baby is moving. Last week as we were getting ready for bed, Betsy felt the baby move - a stronger movement than normal. She had Bill put his hand on her stomach and he felt it too for the first time. Very exciting. Baby Douglass is moving around quite a bit - more and more in the evenings.

Next visit to the doctor - June 22nd for an Ultrasound.

How can something so little need so much?!?!?!?

This is the after-effect of our trip back to Kansas Memorial Day weekend. Not only did Betsy's wonderful HS friends throw her a shower, but her brother and his wife gave us a bunch of stuff as well. Yay for Baby Douglass.

Famous Birthdays

Since our due date is October 23rd, we looked up the famous people who would share our baby's birthday, assuming baby Douglass arrives right on time.

In the realm of world leaders we have Tsar Peter II, and former Vice President Adlai Stevenson.

In the world of sports we have Chi Chi Rodriguez, Doug Flutie, and former Redskins linebacker Patrise Alexander.

In the world of entertainment, there is talk show host Johnny Carson, country singer Dwight Yokum, director Ang Lee, singer/songwriter "Wierd" Al Yankovic, and actor Ryan Reynolds.

Here's a link to see all of the famous people who share October 23rd as their birthday: Famous Birthdays

Week 17 over...Week 18 begins.....

Baby Douglass is growing and so is momma Betsy. This week Baby Douglass' skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone, and the umbilical cord — the lifeline to the placenta — is growing stronger and thicker. Baby Douglass probably weighs about 5 ounces now (about as much as a turnip), and is around 5 inches long from head to rump. Baby Douglass can move its joints, and it's sweat glands are starting to develop.

Additionally, those little fingers and toes feature one-of-a-kind prints!!!!

Out of everything we keep reading, we know that we'll be able to feel Baby Douglass move soon....so excited for that experinece..and hope that Betsy knows it's the baby moving and not gas!

Baby Douglass' beating heart

The other day we went to the OB doctor for our 3rd appointment - well, Betsy went to the appointment as Bill was a little under the weather. However, all is going well. Betsy got to hear the baby's heartbeat again. It is amazing to hear it beat like that...we could listen to it forever. It reminds you that there really is a living being growing inside of your body.

But, the heartbeat sounds great..healthy and fast.

Our next appointment is June 8th and we'll be getting our 20 week sonogram. We're looking forward to seeing how big Baby Douglass has grown since it's first pictures in March.

Yellow Lillies or Tigger's Tummy???

Over the past couple of months, we've been "nesting"....or Betsy has been "nesting" and Bill has been doing all of the work. While Betsy was on a work trip in April, Bill painted the nursery - Yellow Lillies or Tigger's Tummy (depending on who you talk to). We decided on yellow as we don't yet know the gender of Baby Douglass.

Everyone keeps asking us if we will find out....and that is still under discussion. Betsy doesn't want to find out and Bill does.

What are your thoughts?

The Hospital

Happy May Everyone!

We can't believe it's already May..and we can't believe that it's snowing outside today either.

This afternoon, we went on a tour of the Birth Center at Memorial Hospital - Central. This is the hospital where we will deliver. The Birth Center features private birth and recovery suites, clinical specialists and is connected to the Memorial Hospital for Children should there be any problems.

We were very impressed with what we saw and what we heard on our tour and feel as though we'll be very comfortable giving birth there.

Here is a link to a virtual tour of the hospital: The Hospital

We did find it odd that we were the only couple on the tour not giving birth within the next 4 weeks. Does that make us over-anxious?????

World Turned Upside Down.....what???

One of my favorite replies so far to the announcement of the upcoming addition to our family:

"You will love it -- the best reason ever to have your world turned upside down!"

Next OB appointment is April 12th. Hope to hear the heartbeat during this visit.

The First Trimester

The ride begins.....
And who knew that it would truly begin on Bill's 38th birthday. That was when we ventured to the OB doctor for our first visit (week 8). Not only did the entire staff know that it was Bill's birthday, but we were able to get a first glimpse of our growing baby inside of Betsy.

Due Date: October 23rd

Prior to the doctor's visit, we had known for a couple of weeks that Betsy was pregnant, but the doctor's office wanted to wait until week 8 for our first visit. It was a very good visit - and everything seeems to be going well. But, boy, were we in for a shock of all of the information that we were going to need to start reading and becoming literate in. Of course, you always know that a pregnancy is going to be a learning curve, but we guess you always think that you'll have time for that later.

As the pictures were taken on Bill's birthday, we had some fun with our families and sent the pictures in an email titled "Pictures from Bill's Birthday" - telling everyone not to forget to call him and wish him a Happy Birthday. For the record, Andy Liebsch (Betsy's brother) gets the prize for checking his email first even though Cindy Cookson (Betsy's sister) and the Ted Douglass family (Bill's brother) knew the day before.

The first trimester hasn't been too bad. There has been no traditional "morning sickness", however, there were sometimes when a shot of nauseousness would come over Betsy. Before it was confirmed that we were pregnant, Betsy did notice that she was quite hungry, and now looking back at it, Betsy thinks that maybe she was mistaking the nauseousness for hunger pangs and just ate her way through the first couple of months!!!

We are now finishing up week 11 and we go back for our next doctor's visit on April 12th. We'll update again then.

Thanks for all of the well wishes and support we've gotten thus far. We are so excited!
